Exxon and Synthetic Genomics Algae Project Inches Ahead

As reported a year ago, Exxon and partner Synthetic Genomics (a Craig Venter venture) opened a small test lab. They are also funding another $600 million for more work, which should by a lot of slime filled plastic bags. BP claims to have invested more ($1.5 billion,) but little has been heard about their developments.

This looks like marketing and public relations to me. I can't find any patents from these guys.

I still think it is surprising that the hard-boiled, oil-execs at Exxon are really investing in algae.
